About Ukuphula

ukuPhula iKetanga
(Zulu for Breaking the Chains)

The program is broken into 6 distinct areas:

1 Introduction to the program and its content (Intro)
2 The introduction to the person of Christ (Session 1 - 6)
3 Understanding more about how to develop our relationship with Him
4 Meeting Christ through the Holy Spirit - Conversion
5 Discipleship and Growth
6 Planning the Road ahead

Ukuphula iKetanga has been formed with the express purpose of leading South Africans to the Lord, through a participative program, that allows plenty of time within a small group. We start with a 5/10 minute overview of what the subject will be for the session on that day, then breaking into the assigned groups, each person is given the booklet (session content) for the day and discussion will evolve around this content.

It is envisaged that a session will follow a routine somewhere along the following lines. This “draft” of a session time-table, takes into account the fact that we seldom really get the 2 (two) hours allocated for Spiritual Care in the prisons. But it ensures that the maximum time is given to group discussion and participation.

Start End Activity
 9.00  9.30  Worship and community praying (1)
9.30  9.45  Explanation of session contents
9.45  10.45  Small group activity about session
 10.45  11.00  Prayer & Closing

The introductory session is run with the whole group of potential guests, team members and is used as an “ice-breaker” allowing all to meet, and grasp what the rest of the program will be about. It should be fun, light hearted if at all possible (remembering where you are) and contain dollops of worship (singing) as well as prayer. Remember, that many of the guests have a spiritual background, and we need to set the trend from day one. Extend an invitation to attend the program, but lay down parameters(1) from day one. Based on the size of your team, explain that you allow 8/10 guests per 2 two(2) facilitators. Given the facilitators, a small group whose maximum size must not exceed 10, will then be formed. Smaller groups may be formed if you have enough team members.

Offer participation in the program, register those who are interested in attending. If the number of applicants exceeds what you can cope with, there are 2 (two) options available.
1) Liaise with the Religious Care Co-ordinator and ask him/her to help you select those who can attend. Please do this after praying for guidance
2) If the prison has a Church Committee, ask for their suggestions in the selection process. There is no harm in applying 1 & 2 together.
Please remember that the motive for attending any activity, which eases the restrictions placed on an inmate’s freedom, is always very welcome.

(1) e.g. Those attending cannot move in and out “to go to the toilet” – this is a ploy to talk with mates in general
